Could you please introduce yourself and share some background about your disability?

I am Alex, the founder of Permastunned Gaming and I have congenital myopathy.

In what ways does your disability influence your daily life, particularly when it comes to using digital products or services?

I have weak muscles, so using peripherals can be taxing. I generally do everything on my PC, as a smartphone is annoying to use.

Which digital devices, platforms, applications, or websites do you use regularly, and have they been helpful in addressing accessibility challenges?

I frequently use my PC and smartphone for various purposes. On my computer, I engage with platforms like Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, email services, streaming platforms, gaming services like Steam, and messaging app WhatsApp. My smartphone primarily serves for making calls and enabling Multi-factor authentication. Thankfully, these platforms and applications are user-friendly, allowing me to manage most of my communication digitally, which is especially beneficial given the challenges of handling traditional mail.

What specific design features do you find most beneficial in digital interfaces considering your disability?

Full desktop integration even if the app was designed for smartphones. Many features of smartphone apps are not available on desktop versions. Instagram is a good example of this, as some features are only available if you use their smartphone app.

What advice would you give to product designers, who often struggle to understand the needs of users with disabilities, on enhancing the accessibility of digital products?

Hire an accessibility consultant. Include disabled people in the development of your product from day 1.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us or any additional insights you’d like to offer?

Accessibility is a numbers game, as all disabilities are unique. The more accessibility options are available, the more accessible the world becomes.
